Following Friday (3)
Q. Have you ever wanted a villain to win at the end of a story? If so, which one?
Several times actually. When a hero or heroine starts to annoy me my thoughts turn a bit vindictive and I start cheering for the other side. My specific answer, however, is in reference to Rachel Vincent's Shifter series. SPOILER WARNING (For anyone who has not read book 3)!
So in that book, Faythe was on trial for turning and then killing her ex-boyfriend. And to be fair, neither of those things were her fault, exactly. But my GOD Faythe is annoying. And so privileged--she walks into the trial thinking nothing can touch her because she's a girl and her father is the alpha. There is one guy on the council deciding her fate who really has it out for her--our villain. And after a point, I was totally on board with his campaign to have Faythe killed or otherwise severely punished.
Cool blog! And about my Follow Friday (www.imlostinabook.blogspot.com) I was rooting for Vader to turn good.
ReplyDeleteThat really stinks when the hero or heroine is so bad that you want to switch sides!! lol
ReplyDeleteI have not read the series and I plan on it, so I didn't read your whole pst :P

ReplyDeleteI didn't read your description of the villain because I haven't read the Shifter series yet, but the fact that you actually cheered for the villain at one point makes me interested in reading it!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this series yet! But I hope to soon!

Have a great weekend!
I haven't read that book but I can relate. In my case, it usually happens when I watch a movie. I want the annoying character to be punished but in the end, I'm still on his/her side though... hehe

Literary Lioness--The penguin thing started out as a joke of sorts between my fiance and I. Penguins are my favorite animal, so he started looking for little stuffed ones to give me instead of flowers or candy. Its been five years, so I now have tons of the little guys occupying my bed and bookshelf.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Pawing Through Books and following! I'm following you back. I totally understand how you could start to root for the villain when the heros start to become annoying!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the follow, following you back :)
ReplyDeleteIn regards to your comment on my blog, despite my critical review of it, I think it's still a book worth reading :)
Hi! New follower here. I still can't think of a villain that I wanted to win in the end :( I think I need to think about it even more.. It's interesting though when you said that you start cheering for the villain when the MC starts to annoy you. What I do when that usually happens is put down the book, run a few errands or sleep on it then continue reading when my irritation passes. :)
ReplyDeleteHaHa! I've not read the book you mentioned but I could feel your pain :-)
ReplyDeleteFollowing you back from the #FF.
I don't think I have ever wanted a villain to win. Interesting question, I've never thought of it before.

Doesn't sound like a book I would enjoy. If the characters get to annoying in the book I have to put it down. Thanks for Hopping by!
ReplyDeleteActually, that's a good point! But I can't think of any characters that have annoyed me enough to make them want to lose quite yet... maybe Jacob in Twilight, now that I think about it? Lol.

Ha ha! I love all the vindictive answers that just want the MC or protagonist dead because they're annoying.
ReplyDeleteOh I hate whiny characters! My choice had to be Wile E. Coyote, he tried so hard but always failed, such a shame.

ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting Drying Ink - and I never considered the question that way, but when I've disliked protagonists, I've ended up rooting for the antagonists as well. Maybe I'm just vindictive ( :D ).
